Last week saw the Dutch nation rise up to crowdfund the life of Hermien, the cow. Yes, you read that right. While the UK was squabbling over new Brexit policies and the US frantically prepared for the Super Bowl, the people of The Netherlands rallied together to support a cow who courageously escaped the slaughterhouse and found a new home in the woods.
Crowdfunding serves society by delivering innovative products from engineers, brilliant art by creatives and supports heart-breaking causes. But sometimes a crowdfunding project comes along that rocks our world… with laughter. Cause your first reaction will be ‘Is this really happening?’. And then you remember that this is the internet and the internet has a weird sense of humour.
So, without further ado, here are the most hilarious crowdfunding projects ever launched.
1. Potato Salad
Who doesn’t’ remember Potato Salad Guy, who only asked for $10 to make food for a picnic? Poor guy was just hungry and didn’t even know what kind of potato salad he’d be making but he ended up raising over $55,000 because of the bizarre sense of humour of the internet. In the end he donated most of the money to combat homelessness in his hometown of Ohio.
2. Hermien, the cow

I woke up to the following headline this weekend: ‘Dutch Cow Escapes Death, Crowdfunding Saves her from Slaughter’. Apparently Hermien the Dutch cow made her big escape while being loaded on a truck headed to the abattoir and escaped being recaptured by her owners for a whole month! The nation rallied around to help, with the hashtags #JesuisHermien, #GoHermien and #MeKoe (Koe means Cow in Dutch, a play on the #MeToo movement) trending on Twitter. Even the Royal Family took up her case, with Pieter van Vollenhoven, the son-in-law of former Queen Beatrix urging “we’ve got to save Hermien”. The campaign raised almost $60,000 and Hermien will get to live out the rest of her life on green pastures. If she comes back to the herd, of course.
3. The Best Prank Birthday Card Ever

I consider it my social duty to raise awareness about this spectacular gift card that got funded with a whopping $92,000. Evil geniuses Travis and Nick Peterson designed a birthday card that plays a birthday jingle when you open it. However, unlike other musical birthday cards, this card doesn't stop playing the music until either it's broken or the battery dies. A simple and beautiful way to torture a loved one on their birthday.
4. Giant Lionel Richie Head
‘Hello, is it me you’re looking for?’ Absolutely! The inflatable giant head of Lionel Richie raised $8,000 on Kickstarter and the crowd got to party with it live at the 2013 Bestival Festival.
5. The World’s Largest Jockstrap
Artist Michael Barrett wanted to break a world record, so he decided to create the world’s largest jockstrap and submit it to the Guinness Book of World Records. He got fully funded with $850 and masterfully accomplished his goal.
6. Writing Dumb Things in the Sky
Kurt Braunohler's Cloud Project got funded with $6,800 so that he can pay someone to write in the sky. Do you think this was an attempt at a romantic gesture? Guess again. He just wanted to write half-sentences like “How do I land?”, “Clouds 4 EVA”, “OMG I’m flying!” and my personal favourite, “Tweet me bro!”
7. Send a Tardis into space
Doctor Who fans really came together in this historic crowdfunding campaign that raised almost $89,000 to send a Tardis into space. The launch was planned for the 50th anniversary of the series in 2013 but was delayed due to unforeseen changes to Doctor Who’s schedule.
8. POOP: The Game
Ever wanted to pretend you’re pooping together with your friends? Now’s your chance to bring together 4 of your best mates for an unforgettable night of fun and games. Pooping games that is. The Uno-like card game raised almost $12,000 in its campaign.
9. Crystal Bacon
We can all agree that bacon is the most delicious thing on this Earth. Does that mean it warrants its own jewellery line? Greg Kiesow thought so and he launched a crowdfunding campaign that ended up raising more than $2,700. So, for those who want to showcase their love for bacon you now have the option of wearing it as a necklace, bracelet and even earrings! Yumm.
10. The Southpaw Protector
Do you know those moments when you’re writing and all of a sudden the side of your hand gets covered in ink and graffiti and it’s all dirty?! No more! The Southpaw Protector is here to protect your paws from the ugly smudges. For only $15 you can get your own Super Paw Protector! Don’t hesitate – the time for change is now. Actually, the campaign ended but they did raise $233. Kudos.
